Hike in the Mountain Village Frigiliana

The beautiful village of Frigiliana is located 7km from Nerja up in the mountains. It has an several 1000 years old history with amongst others an molasses factory still active. You will also find an old olive press also still working. The village has got a lot of narrow streets and beautiful white houses. You will find restaurants, shops and cafés. On Thursdays there is a market in the town square. Here you will find everything from homemade honey, nuts to leater goods and locally produced ceramics. The market is open until 1pm.

In Frigiliana there are also a lot of nice hiking routes.

Things to see in Frigiliana

The old quater of Frigiliana, of Moorish-Mudejar origin, is without doubt one of the best preserved in the province. A walk through the village at any time of day although especially at night, will transport us back to times gone by leaving the noise of heavy traffic and other city life annoyance behind us.

The Frigiliana Museum of Archeology
. When it opened officially in December 2009, it was the only archeological museum in the Axarquia.

El Ingenio – An old factory from 1725 that produces molasses of the “Nuestra Señora del Carmen brand of miel de caña”, the only such factory in Europe.

The church of Saint Anthony of Padua – The church was built in 1676 in renaissance style.
Remains of the Arab Castle – Very little remains of the Castle of Lizar. It used to occupy and area of 4000 square meters before it was demolished in 1569. It is believed to be built in the 9th century.

Casa Del Apero – This building, housing a granary, stables and cow sheds, and a storage area for farming equipment, was probably built in the beginning of the 17th century to serve the El Ingenio factory. It has now been converted to a cultural centre “Casa Del Apero”. It is housing a museum, the municipal library, exhibition spaces and the Tourist Information Office.
